On July 31, 1998 Tom Myers, Dominic Groves, Helge Pedersen, Chris Poland and Perry Murray went on a 3-day on/offroad trip in Washington State called the Horsethief 500. See the BLOG for the full story.

Aside from the large steel gate, this bridge appeared to be perfectly passable by motorcycle, provided you don\'t mind dragging body parts on the ground.Helge typically refrains from scratching his motorcycle unless it\'s absolutely necessary (as in this case.)
Tom flicks the clutch to raise the footpegs out of a rooty rut. Such maneuvers become more difficult when you add a tent and sleeping bag to a 310 lb machine!
The view into Horsethief Basin. Four of the approximately twenty switchbacks are visible in the photo as the trail drops six hundred feet into the basin. A motorcycle is typically seven feet long. This path is barely three feet wide, making several of these switchbacks the kind where you \"get off the bike and lift the rear wheel\". These are the kind of obstacles which ensure that Horsethief Basin will remain a remote and special place. We dropped into the basin just after sunset. It would be impossible to get the BMW back up this trail, so we were completely dependent on the exit (over Horsehead pass) being rideable. But that was tomorrow......
Helge arrives in Horsethief basin after dark. Lucky for the moon, as he was having trouble with his headlight. A broken taillight bulb had twisted and was blowing the fuse.
Nick, near Boiling Lake. This is a beautiful place, and it\'s open only for a few months in the summer. The rest of the time it\'s buried in snow. (Altitude 7200ft)
Switchback 3: Chris and Perry stand back as Helge muscles and finesses 450 lbs of BMW up Horsehead Pass. It\'s a good thing he stopped in at Ride West BMW for a bashplate before this trip.
