What the datacard will do for you

Garmin

38, 40 ,45, , 48

II, II+, III

12, 12XL, 12CX,
all eTrex
GPS III+, V, 12MAP, 76MAP, 76S

<------ These models do not use datacards.

All of these GPSs have memory to store waypoints, routes and tracklogs.

The 12MAP, III+ (hardwired 1.4Mb), eTrex Legend (8Mb), Vista(24Mb), 76MAP(8Mb), and 76s(24Mb) have additional memory to store maps.

eMap

(Zone capacity: (v2.5) 99 or (v2.71) 525 MapSource zones)

older StreetPilot and ColorMap
(Zone capacity: 50 MapSource zones)

New StreetPilot III and GPS176
(Zone capacity: 525 MapSource zones)
eMap and StreetPilot have a fairly detailed basemap of the Americas, with about 10,000 cities, many highways and arterials. There is memory space for waypoints, tracklogs, and routes.

The existing basemap cannot be changed, all you can do is add detail to it. MapSource is the ONLY way to add map detail to the GPS.

eMap and StreetPilot have NO on-board memory for **additional** MapSource detail (i.e. *every road*). For these models you will need to insert an 8Mb, 16Mb or 32Mb datacard to load the additional map detail from MapSource. Our eMap "Deluxe" package comes with an 8Mb datacard.

For eMap and StreetPilot, the Metroguide CDs will activate the "FIND" button, which is very useful (restaurants, ATMs, addresses, the list is practically endless).

See the GPS comparison for more specifications.

Datacards

Here's the StreetPilot with
the datacard inserted. It looks like it's not all the way in, but this is all it goes.
The eMap is shown with
batteries and datacard removed.

The datacard is proprietary and fits ONLY Garmin GPS products. There is no standardized flashcard or memory stick available to fit Garmin products.

For examples of much map each size datacard will hold, look here.

Garmin hi-speed Datacard loader (USB Programmer).

The USB card loader is essential for loading large cards. To load a 128Mb card thru the GPS will take 4 hours. With the Colormap, remember that you only have 3 hours of battery life. With the USB cardloader, 128MB takes 8 minutes.

StreetPilot owners:

Do you have Metroguide?
See the note ---->

eMap load time: 1 hour

StreetPilot load time: (can't do it on batteries)

Colormap load time: 2 hours
(you need to be certain that the GPS can operate for 2 hours. Use new batteries, or better yet, get some rechargeable batteries)

USB programmer: 2 minutes

Note:

Older StreetPilot and ColorMap owners will need Metroguide to make use of a 32Mb datacard because older StreetPilot is limited to 50 map area "zones". (New SPIII holds hundreds of zones) Four large Metroguide zones (average 7.5Mb) will fill the 32Mb card. Or use two Metroguide zones, then "top it off" with Roads&Rec.

If using **Roads&Rec zones only** (0.3 Mb each), you can only load about 13Mb into an older StreetPilot.

The eMap can fill a 32Mb card using any of the MapSource products. If you are having problems get the new version for the eMap (v2.71) which allows 525 zones (from Garmin support).

You will need a USB card loader to fill this card with a ColorMap because the ColorMap doesn't run long enough on a set of batteries to load 64Mb.

eMap load time: 2 hours

StreetPilot load time: (can't do it on batteries)

Colormap load time: (can't do it on batteries)

USB programmer: 4 minutes

64 Mb has same issues as 32Mb card above. Metroguide can fill this card. Other Mapsource products work with this card but you will be limited to 50 zones on older StreetPilot and ColorMap.

The latest eMap system software from Garmin support allows 525 zones. Update your eMap if you intend to load Roads&Rec or Topo. You can mix zones from any MapSource product onto any datacard.

ColorMap users please note: USB programmer is required to fill this card with a ColorMap because the ColorMap doesn't run long enough on a set of batteries to load 128Mb.

eMap and 176 system (check your software version and get the latest from Garmin support) allows 525 zones. If you are loading Roads&Rec or Topo (small 300K zones) you can hit the 525 zone limit at around 105Mb. To fill a 128Mb datacard you may need to mix in some zones from metroguide (Metroguide has large chunks, 7 Mb each).
