Simple GPS example:

The example below shows the "compass page" which is the most useful basic page for using the GPS to lead you to a waypoint. The page shown is from the GPSIII, shown at actual size. The GPSII+, 12 and 12XL have a similar page. This is BASIC GPS. If your GPS has detailed maps on the screen, (such as the GPSIII+), you probably won't use this function often, but it's still good to know in case you run off the edge of the map!

In this example, the rider (pushed the "MARK" button and) created a "waypoint" before he left his truck. He then named it "TRUCK". This "waypoint" called TRUCK is the Latutide and Longitude, recorded in the GPS memory which pinpoint the location of his truck on the surface of the earth.

He's been exploring for several hours with reckless abandon, and is coming around to the truck from a different direction, following the blue arrow on the GPS screen. The truck is 1.75 miles away, off towards the left a little.

Current speed is shown (30MPH). You can put other values in this "field" if you want. If your vehicle already has a speedometer, you can choose another value in this field, such as "odometer", or "elapsed time" or many other options.

compass_a

See "Position A" on map
"DIST TO NEXT" is your current distance to the waypoint called "TRUCK". "TRUCK" is where your truck is - 1.75 miles away.

The blue arrow points to the waypoint called "TRUCK".

The red compass ring shows your current bearing with "up" as "straight ahead". Therefore, you are moving SouthEast.
compass_b

See "Position B" on map
"DIST TO NEXT" has dropped to 1.55 miles . You're getting closer to "TRUCK".

The blue arrow always points towards "TRUCK", and has rotated further to the left.

"Straight ahead" on the compass ring shows that you are still moving SouthEast.
compass_c

See "Position C" on map
"DIST TO NEXT" has dropped to 1.10 miles . You're getting closer to "TRUCK".

The blue arrow says that"TRUCK" is directly to your left. If there is a road going "left", you should take it because your truck is directly to the NorthEast from your current position.

"Straight ahead" on the compass ring shows that you are still moving SouthEast.
compass_d

See "Position D" on map
"DIST TO NEXT" has increased to 1.30 miles . You're getting farther from"TRUCK".

The blue arrow says that"TRUCK" is behind and to your left. If there was a road going "left", you should have taken it. Turn around!

The red compass ring shows that you are still moving SouthEast.
compass_e

See "Position E" on map
(So you turned around and took that Left)

"DIST TO NEXT" is now 0.71 miles . You're getting closer to "TRUCK".

The blue arrow says that"TRUCK" is straight ahead.

The red compass ring has rotated to show that you are now moving NorthEast.

Remembering beer in the cooler, and noting the certainty at which you will be opening it soon has caused the speed to increase accordingly.

Here's what's happening.

(use your "BACK" button to return)

compass_map

Notice how the arrow and the distance are like a "rubber band" stretching from your current position to TRUCK at all times.
