*** PLUS ***
eMap, StreetPilot and 176 have no on-board memory for maps. For these models you will need a datacard to load the maps into. We recommend 32Mb minimum (for good price-value). Note: It is NOT possible to delete the basemap that came in your GPS. You can only add detail, and only with MapSource software. Add & delete all you want the basemap is permanent. |
| Use your MapSource CDs to create waypoints, routes, and download and edit tracklogs. You can PRINT color maps of where you've been, using your Mapsource CD. Go get MapSource v5.4! (2.9Mb). You must own one copy of any MapSource CD to get the v4.09 to work. |

![]() Six rectangles above show a (1440K) TOPO load into the GPSIII+ (eMap and others hold a LOT more). In this area of mountainous central Washington, the topographic detail is intense, thus each of the six zones is about 22X18 miles. Map scale shown (see lower left of GPS screen) is 20 miles. (=32km)
Here's what the Topo data looks like on the GPS screen. The Topo CD is best for hiking, mountain biking or off-road travel where the terrain is very important. It's nice to be able to check the altitude (at a waypoint) right on the GPS!Map scale shown (see lower left) is 0.2 miles. (=320m) |

Note the BLACK TRIANGLE in the center pointed west. This triangle is your current position, traveling westward. Here, the actual trail was faint and very difficult to follow, but it shows up on the USFS maps AND on the GPS screen!!!
Navigating in the backcountry is getting easier all the time! See the
photo of the same area on a map

Map scale on the GPS screen
(see lower left) is 0.5 miles.

It's fairly easy to locate trails on the map when they're on the screen of your GPS.
This is how you use the GPS (with maps) in the forest. You look at your little GPS screen, noting the roads/trails/streams etc, then you look for the same shape features (roads or trails or streams) on your paper maps. Finding your position thus LEARNING your way around in the forest has never been easier or quicker.
The dashed lines are standard "one-mile" section lines on this forest map.
