GPS Vmod (for hi-RPM or high vibration use)

This is most important on single-cylinder motorcycles and some twins. The smoother the engine, the less important.

This is a motorcycle engine-vibration problem

We've been using GPS off-road for several years, and are the first to acknowledge that a GPS and a dirt bike is a good combination! However, the full-spectrum vibration output of a motorcycle engine puts special demands on any electronic instrument attached to the bike. We have a modification to increase the reliability of the units in this harsh (but fun!) environment. We also highly recommend a vibration-isolated mount such as the Touratech mount. For single-cylinder or racing use see the "MvG mount.

If you intend to use your GPS off-road (or if you ride "in the higher RPMs") we recommend the "Vmod" where we open the GPS and further secure internal components properly for use in a vibrational environment. It's called "hardening". This service is only available at the time of purchase on new GPS Vs purchased from CycoActive.

Garmin cannot provide this kind of specialized service for the tiny percentage going to motorcycle customers. Remember that Garmin warranties your GPS for one year. But at only $20 extra, the Vmod is worthwhile insurance to reduce the chance of your GPS crapping out during an adventure!

The only model we modify is the GPS V.

Vmod1: $20 with GPS purchase from CycoActive (II / III / V)

BEST is to plug the GPS into 12v DC motorcycle power. If your motorcycle has a headlight but no battery, likely it is AC (not DC). To use AC headlight wires to power your GPS, see 030-0021.

battery vibration fix

The Vmod will not cure "vibration induced temporary shutdown". Garmin can't cure this either, so don't send it in for warranty if it's shutting down under vibration. If you're having shutdown problems see the battery tips page.
