Garmin's new eTrex!

The eTrex Summit. GPS, altimeter, and compass in one tiny package.

The eTrex Summit comes on the heels of the extremely popular eTrex, which was designed for both marine and recreation use. This new all-in-one navigation device for the outdoor enthusiast is the first combination GPS, altimeter, and electronic compass. The electronic compass provides bearing information when you're standing still and the altimeter determines precise altitude, so you can tell how high you've climbed and your rate of ascent.

Like its predecessor, the eTrex Summit boasts a powerful 12 parallel channel GPS receiver and comes packaged in a small, sleek case with operating buttons located on either side of the unit. The case is completely waterproof to withstand immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

The eTrex Summit: It's what the hard-core outdoorsman has been waiting for.

The main differences between the eTrex and eTrex Summit

  • The eTrex Summit has an accurate pressure-altimeter which records the altitude (in one foot increments) at waypoints.
  • The eTrex Summit has an electronic compass. Other GPSs can only display compass direction when you're moving.
  • eTrex Summit records 3000 tracklog points. eTrex, and almost all other GPSs record 2000 points or less.

eTrex navigation features

  • Waypoints/Icons: 500 with name and graphic symbol
  • Route: updateable to 20 reversible routes with up to 50 waypoints (but to get this update you must load the free update from www.garmin.com/support using the G10206 PC cable.)
  • Tracks: Automatic track log; 10 saved tracks let you retrace your path in both directions
  • Trip computer: Current speed, average speed, time of sunrise/sunset, resetable maximum speed, trip timer, and trip distance
  • Position format: Lat/Lon, UTM/UPS, Maidenhead, MGRS and other grids

Barometric Altimeter specifications

  • Accuracy: 10 feet with proper calibration (user and/or automatic calibration)
  • Resolution: 1 foot
  • Range: -2,000 to 30,000 feet
  • Elevation computer: Current elevation, resetable minimum and maximum elevation, ascent/descent rate, total ascent/descent, average and maximum ascent/descent rate
  • Pressure: Local pressure (mbar/inches HG), 12-hour automatic pressure trend recording

Compass specifications

  • Accuracy: ±5 degrees with proper calibration (user calibration)
  • Resolution: 1 degree

Cables for the new eMap and eTrex are not compatible with other Garmin units.
