A flicka de clutch
XR600.

Tom flicks the clutch to raise the footpegs out of a rooty rut. Such maneuvers become more difficult when you add a tent and sleeping bag to a 310 lb machine!

Nick traversing a steep hillside, headed for the last of the sunset.

Helge Pedersen took this photo with Nick's disposable camera!
Perry, over the top at sunset. Chris is in the right background on this narrow ridgeline trail.

This is near the end of Day 2.

Perry & Chris head for Deadman Pass.

They're not "lookin' too spry" at this point and are unaware that Deadman Pass will tax them further.

Sunset at the top of Deadman Pass.

The view into Horsethief Basin. Four of the approximately twenty switchbacks are visible in the photo as the trail drops six hundred feet into the basin.

A motorcycle is typically seven feet long. This path is barely three feet wide, making several of these switchbacks the kind where you "get off the bike and lift the rear wheel". These are the kind of obstacles which ensure that Horsethief Basin will remain a remote and special place.

We dropped into the basin just after sunset. It would be impossible to get the BMW back up this trail, so we were completely dependent on the exit (over Horsehead pass) being rideable. But that was tomorrow......

Chris arrives in Horsethief basin after dark.

Deadman pass is in the background, just below the moon.

Perry arrives in Horsethief basin after dark.
Helge arrives in Horsethief basin after dark.

Lucky for the moon, as he was having trouble with his headlight.

A broken taillight bulb had twisted and was blowing the fuse.
Nick arrives in the basin after dark.
