XR400 Airbox tip

The filter retainer on an XR400 (and the new 250) is not very reliable on the '96 and '97 models. With '98 and later it has been improved, but if someone were to open the dzus fasteners for a lookie, the retainer can slip off it's catch. IF it goes unnoticed (airbox door closed without resetting retainer), then you might ride off with the filter unsecured.

  • You will need a drill.
  • 12ga copper housewire works great.

    Ooooh. Dirty filter!!!

Some wanker has just opened your airbox cover. As he was opening it, the filter retainer slipped off it's catch. Unaware that he just relaeased your filter, he closes the door.....and off you go. Luckily, the high suction of your dirty filter holds it on.....

The airfilter retainer slips off its catch easily, and it's questionable whether the airbox door (when worn, especially '96/'97) can hold the retainer when riding.

Drill two holes in the retainer catch, as close to the edge as possible.

Create a wire "staple", poke it thru the holes, and bend the ends down.

This wire staple will prevent your filter retainer from ever slipping off the catch.

We used 12ga copper housewire because it's easy to bend without deforming the plastic catch. Besides, it's easy to find (at the hardware store or all over the ground at a construction site).

If you decide that the filter retainer is now too difficult to unhook, 'chamfer' the edge of the airbox with a knife. It shouldn't take much; just shave the corner off.
